Year Four: Simon Bolivar
Simon Bolívar is known as one of the greatest heroes of South American independence. You may have already noticed a connection between his surname and the country Bolivia – yes, it is named after him, as well as the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. As well as this, a number of statues and monuments honor his contribution to Latin American freedom and in 2006 an eighth star was added to the existing seven on the flag to fulfill the wish of national hero Simon Bolivar. Today, Simón Bolívar Day is celebrated in many Latin American countries.
In the course of his military career, Bolívar fought over 100 battles. From 1819 to 1830, he served as the president of Gran Colombia, which included territories of modern-day Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Panama, western Guyana, northwest Brazil and Venezuela. It is no surprise that he is a significant person who has changed the world.
